Exercises to improve your Running

By 6 October 2012Latest, Running

Almost 4ooo people took part in last Sunday’s, first ever Ealing Half Marathon; I was one of them and was a little disappointed with my time.

The reasons for running a slower time than planned can be many; mine was due to going off too fast over the first half of the race.

As a Personal Trainer, I think that a lot of runners neglect strength and conditioning exercises and Core exercises in the gym. These type of exercises can improve times and prevent injury during training and, of course, have general benefits to Core strength and strength and tone in the body overall.

So, what are these exercises?

Well, it’s very difficult to explain, in detail, using the written word but essentially we are talking about Lower Body, Upper Body and Core:

Lower Body exercises could be :

  • Step-in Lunges
  • Single Leg Squats/Deadlifts
  • Walking Lunges
  • Hamstring Swiss Ball Leg Curls
  • Eccentric Leg Extensions

Upper Body Exercises could be:

  • Standing Shoulder Press
  • Single/Double Arm Row
  • Upright Row
  • Single/Double Arm Chest Press

Core Exercises could be:

  • Lying Leg Lowers
  • Swiss Ball Supermans
  • Lo-Hi Raises

If you a runner and are looking to improve your time over any distance or want to stay injury free then you can book a free consultation with us to discuss how we could implement these exercises into your routine.

Equally, you don’t have to be a runner to do these exercises, they have fantastic benefits on overall body tone, shape and fitness for everyone.
