Summer Holidays are not far away, and for some of us last week (school half term) was the first chance to get abroad this year.
In recent times I have never exercised during a holiday abroad, but I am gradually changing my view on this and during my week in Spain last week I actually exercised 4 times!
We all work really hard most of the year and your holidays are a time to relax, eat, drink and be merry. During our Spanish holiday I started to think that part of my relaxation would be to hit the hotel gym and also go for a run in some warm weather for a change!
During my working week it can be really difficult to find time to work-out and I actually work in a gym, but being on holiday means that you actually have more time for doing the things that relax you and maybe that includes exercise?
So, instead of cramming in a quick 30 minute workout as usual, I found I had plenty of time to go the gym or have a run under the Spanish sun and with this extra time came a more enjoyable workout. I wasn’t thinking about my next client turning up or if I had time to actually sit down for lunch, or will I get to the bank before it closes; I actually had enough time to really concentrate on my workout.
Also, having our little girl with us on holiday is obviously a joy but every now again you need an hour to yourself, don’t you?
Mrs Summers also had a bit of down-time for her swims so it wasn’t just all about me!
So, let me know your thoughts on this subject; do you find exercise more enjoyable when you are on holiday or do you think that you work hard enough at home and just forget about exercise altogether on holiday?
Please do leave your comments below, look forward to hearing from you……..

My hubby loves his runs in the sun on holiday while I tend to go for gentle stretching and mobilising when on holiday in the sun or in the sauna/pool and include massage as part of my exercise routine! No really…my muscles get tight from gym and everyday life so their holiday treat is a proper deep massage. Not exactly relaxing at the time but with big benefits. Perhaps a more relaxing massage or self massage a couple of days later to soften them further.
Muscle holiday starts at the airport… no sitting (bad back), circling joints in the plane and walking up and down the aisles in the plane or on longer haul a bit of kneeling, a bit of crossed legs, bit of walking, bit of kneeling one leg, cross leg other leg… Worst thing I ever did was sleep on a plane seated and watch movies for 6hours… couldnt walk for 3 days afterwards! Got to learn by your mistakes and got to love your bones and muscles and treat them just like you treat your senses, stomach, mind etc ciao
Hi Jane,
Very impressed with your “plane routine!” I was going to go for a massage but they are so expensive in these hotels! Stuck to the running instead.
Swimming on holiday – great, anything else feels a bit too like a chore. Having said that, I wished I had packed my trainers for a little jog around the village next to our hotel on our hol – it’s a great way of finding your bearings and discovering new places to eat to revisit post run! And talking of food, it helps to get your appetite going and feel less guilty about the next yummy meal. Holidays, bring on the next one …
Thanks Sarah and Glenda,
Swimming does seem to be a favourite! I guess it doesn’t feel like too much hard work in a lovely big, warm sun soaked pool! I really enjoy running abroad in the heat, it feels so much more enjoyable than pounding the London streets
I enjoy the chance to go swimming on holiday Really love having our own pool when possible so I can swim before breakfast and two or three more times in the day. When I make my fortune a pool is the first item on my list!
