How to recover from operations and injuries fast
By Cathy Howells, client at Bodyline Fitness
Less than 3 weeks after a knee operation (an arthroscopy), I was able to walk 6
miles, squat to almost 45 degrees and travel on tubes and buses without a problem.
If you want to get back to an active life fast, my advice is to get a personal trainer
who specialises in rehab.
What happens with a rehab personal trainer?
Before the operation we planned out my rehab looking at flexible goals and
recovery strategies (diet as well as exercise). We worked on strengthening the
muscles around the knee in preparation for the operation.
After the operation we started with stretching exercises concentrating on the area
around the knee. My personal trainer checked my posture and my gait while walking
on the treadmill. The first sessions incorporated exercises to improve balance and
core stability and to increase strength in the leg muscles.
The ongoing programme: Each week we agree a regime for the week ahead; in my
case a set of daily stretch exercises, more challenging weights exercises for every
second day and a weekly swimming session. The intensity increases week by week.

10 benefits of rehab personal training
1. A step-by-step plan tailored for you – everyone gets better at different rates.
2. Clarity about the way forward – a good rehab trainer will talk to your
physiotherapist/Osteopath so there are no conflicting messages.
3. A sense of making progress – each exercise develops in small steps to a more
advanced level.
4. Keeps you motivated – if you have someone to report to you are more likely to
exercise!
5. Confidence – you know when it’s right to up the ante.
6. A safe pair of hands – you get reined in when you need to take things a bit
slower.
7. A varied programme – you are given a good range of exercises that change every
week.
8. A reliable source of information – the questions you have about your recovery
get answered.
9. A positive attitude – believing you can do it is more than half the battle.
10. Relief from pain and a shorter healing time.
The end result: faster recovery – whatever it is you love doing with your life you can
get back to it quicker with a good rehab personal trainer.
