In my last Blog I started looking at what factors stop you from exercising as much as you wanted to or felt you should do, dealing with “Time” which was the overwhelming favourite! In this Blog I am looking at the other reasons you all gave which were willpower, lack of priority and not knowing what type of exercise to do.
Willpower
You must, of course, want to improve your fitness/health or else you wont do anything about it; it’s as simple as that. The old saying “You don’t know what you got til it’s gone” comes to mind here; I think a lot of us take our health for granted these days and we really should take care of it more while we can so that we can enjoy our “retirement” years in good health.
We all work longer hours, and harder, these days so we should do everything we can now to ensure that we can get the most from our later years. Most of our time these days is taken up with work, but what will we do when we no longer work if our health and fitness have gone? You must find the energy to exercise now to reap the rewards later, think of it as your health & fitness pension plan!
So, start now with 1-2 sessions of 25-30minutes of exercise per week and build it up from there

Prioritise
For a short while, maybe even just one week, make your exercise a priority. Put in two sessions of exercise in your diary for this week and then an activity at the weekend like a big walk, or a swim etc. Write these things in your diary in BIG BOLD INK or key them into your phone in CAPITALS and DO NOT DELETE THEM OR CROSS THEM OUT!
Once you have managed to achieve these targets in week one you will, hopefully, be inspired to carry on into week two, and so on……………..
What Type of Exercise?
So, if we have established that time, priority and willpower are all big factors in not exercising it is fair to say that when you do find time to exercise you should work as efficiently as possible. Here are a few points to get you started:
- Work big muscle groups ie Chest, Back, Legs, as these burn more calories than working on the smaller muscles. So, exercises like Squats, Lunges, Press Ups and Seated Row are all good examples of exercises to perform.
- Do Interval cardio sessions; short sharp bursts of cardio rather than long boring spells on the treadmill or bike. Something like 30secs hard and fast followed by 30secs slow and easy for 10minutes.
- Mix up your gym sessions with cardio, and weights
- Do something you might vaguely enjoy! if you don’t like the gym go for a run or do a fitness class. Simples!!
- Get a Personal Trainer! You may only need 1 or 2 sessions to help get you on the right road, it’s an investment in your future
So, we have started the ball rolling here but there is much more detail that we can go into; if you would like to talk in detail about your current, or future exercise routine please get in touch. Also, let me know what you are currently doing that is working for you and maybe I can pass on your successes!!
