The 5 Exercises To Get You In Shape

This week I came across an article entitled “The Only 12 Exercises You Need to Get in Shape” and whilst all 12 exercises were perfectly valid I couldn’t help thinking that 12 was an awful lot of exercises to have to do!

So, in this post, I give you just 5 exercises that you need to get you into shape!

The common factors running through these exercises is that they all:

  • Work your Core muscles
  • Work large muscle groups, which means you burn more calories and your body shape changes more rapidly
  • Work way more than just a couple of muscle groups
  • Help you with your every-day activities such as lifting things, getting up and down, climbing stairs…..
  • Can be done in short workouts of 30mins (you will need to do the workouts approx 3 x week)


So, here they are, in short video format, the 5 exercises that will get you in shape…..

1. Deadlifts

2. Squats

3. Press Ups

4. Pull Ups

5. Lunges

So there you have it, 5 top exercises for you to perform 2-3 times a week for 4 weeks making sure that you increase any weights you use by approx 10% each week.

Try these for 4 weeks and let me know what differences you feel in your body shape and strength and then we can look at how to continue improving you over the next 4 weeks.

    Thanks Roy – great for the gym. At home I can do push ups, lunges and squats – anything I could do instead of deadlifts and pull ups? Jan

    • Hi Jan,

      You can perform the Deadlift with 2 dumbells if you have them, or you can buy them quite cheaply online. We can go through it during your next PT session.

      Pull Ups can’t really be replicated at home unless you have a chin-up bar! There is an alternative exercise you can do at home with dumbells which, again, we can look at next week.
